After high school, Granberry attended Marion Military Institute in Alabama, before enlisting in the Army Air Service on August 12, 1918 in Jackson, MS.[1] Following the end of World War One, he was honorably discharged on January 14, 1919 and paid the $77.71 due to him for his service[2]. He then prepared to attend West Point and after four attempts, was finally appointed to West Point Military Academy in 1919.[3] While at West Point, by virtue of being one of the eldest in the graduating class of 1923, he received the nickname “Granny.” The same day as his graduation from West Point, 2nd Lt. Granberry married Molly Andrews Carry; his roommate Clyde Rich was his best man.
